imageTell us about your background as an artist:

Although I’m told that my realistic plein aire paintings are good, I truly prefer the “serious fun” stuff - my cartoon surfers.  I feel these are more expressive of our human condition and I take my humor seriously.  That is to say, I feel laughter, by virtue of being healing is a very important and valid aspect of my art.

How did you get started? Have you always been interested in art?

I have always liked to draw, paint, cut, glue, sew or otherwise make things.  I pretty much always knew I would study art in college and so I did.  Along the way, I got interested in recreational surfing, so that ended up feeding my imagery.

What inspires you as an artist?

Our humanity.  Things that make you laugh.  Things that aren’t spoken about out loud.  Goals. Feelings.  Irony.  Colors.  The shivers.

What are some of the ways you promote and sell your artwork?

I probably sell most of my artwork through a network of friends.  I send email previews of new paintings to these friends and collectors.  I also have a store which is partly a gallery, so of course I sell through the gallery.  In the past, I’ve sold my work through other galleries and some artists’ groups.  Currently, I’m negotiating with another gallery to exhibit my work as well.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in learning how to paint?

Well, get some paint and smear it around!  But, seriously, if what you want to do requires drawing skills, etc. take a class with with an artist you admire.  Classes may be available at a community college, artists’ supply, art league or privately.  Enjoy!
