March is Youth Art Month

Each March, Youth Art Month (YAM) emphasizes the value of art education for all children, while encouraging support for quality art programs. Sponsored by the Council for Art Education (CFAE), YAM needs the active support and cooperation of national organizations and institutions, such as NAMTA, to ensure its continued success, as well as the participation of companies and individuals at all levels of the arts industry.

CFAE coordinates national-level YAM activities, including its annual contest, “School Flag Across the US…Flying High.” Each state YAM chairperson selects a student flag design that is representative of the individual state and the spirit of YAM. The flags are flown in a place of prominence in Washington, DC for the month of March, and then displayed at various trade shows, including the NAMTA International Convention & Trade Show, before being returned to the state. There is also a competition for “Best State Art in the Nation.”

You can contact your state chairperson or state Art Education Association for information on what is happening in your area and how you can get involved. Local observances can be coordinated through your school system with art educators, librarians, business community, youth organizations and concerned parents.

For additional information on Youth Art Month, or to find out who your state chairperson is, please contact the Council for Art Education at 781/293-4100 or cherlymlee@acminet.org, or visit http://www.youthartmonth.org/youth_art_month.htm.
